Music in our Performance?

Considering that we are presenting statistics through a visual medium it would be quite interesting exploring using other senses to communicate to our audience. We could perhaps have a soundtrack therefore below are some song choices with statistics next to them.

One Born Every Minute

Statistics indicate that in the UK, one child is born every minute. In order to demonstrate this more fully, we took a balloon and timed six minutes on a clock. This resulted in six balloons being blown up per minute to represent six children being born.

As a group we have considered using this task throughout the entirety of the piece (thirty minutes in total) resulting in thirty balloons being blown up throughout the event. This experiment was just for the purposes of rehearsals.

In addition, as well as using the balloons to indicate the birth rates in the UK, we aim to use the balloon’s to demonstrate death statistics as well, by bursting the balloons.

Please see below a video of our experiment:

Project idea for artist

This is an idea to represent the destruction of the Amazon that is happenign right now. It has been estimated that Every second 2.47 acres (1 hectare) or an area the size of 2 US football pitches is destroyed. Ideas that has been developed are as follows:

Chopping wood every second.

Cutting flowers or vegetation every second.

Sharpening pencils every second.

After discussion on Monday the idea that sounded the most ideal would be the sharpening of pencils so that each twist of the pencil would happen every second. This waste of pencils would represent the destruction of the rain forest.

Project idea for individual artist

Using statistics with the theme of Body and nutrition i have comprised a proposal for one performer to do in our piece.

If a performer skips (with a skipping rope) they burn 20 calories per minute. With this as a basic framework we could record the performer skipping for set amounts of time to represent a certain number of calories, for example:

One Big Mac is 490 calories which aquates to 24 mins and 30 seconds.

One Relentless energy drink is 230 calories which aquates to 11 mins and 30 seconds.

This can be performed live or via a pre- recorded medium. There are so many potential foods and drinks we could present however i have only written the basic frame work for now.

Statistics

Statistics- Collecting and analysing numerical data.

To some they are simply numbers, clinical, devoid of emotion. They are simply facts.

However it might be argued that some statisticus have the power to evoke an emotional response, particularly those regarding illness and death.

Some simply baffle their reader.  It might be suggested that to some people it becomes difficult to comprehend some statistics. I personally find it extremely difficult to process some of the information. This is perhaps because statistics are in number form. They dehumanise the subject, and also because more often than not, the figures are so high it becomes hard to imagine that number.

This is one of the ideas we have explored throughout this process. As a result of a discussion we discussed ways in which we can represent statistics, but rather than using numbers, we intend to use a visual language.

At the start of this process we all individually researched some statistics that we might use in the production. Please find below, some of the statistics that I found:
